At 2672, P. Harikrishna’s Elo rating hasn’t slipped much since 2006. But ranked world No. 25 three years ago with a rating in the 2680s, the Grandmaster from Andhra Pradesh is now 53rd. That means quite a few have crossed him during a period in which he hasn’t made progress.

“Not happy with where I am. It should have been a lot better. I had a few bad outings of late — like one in Bosnia this year where I lost 10 rating points — which has resulted in this slump,” the India A team player told HT on the sidelines of the Asian team chess championship, after a draw against B. Adhivan’s India B on Wednesday.
Harikrishna, who had a career-best rating of 2686 in April before the Bosnia setback, said reaching 2700 is one of his immediate targets. “I wish to stay there. To do that, I have to become stronger as a player. So for me, to get better as a player is more important at the moment than touching 2700.”
To achieve his goal, Harikrishna doesn’t play in India, where he runs the risk of losing points. After trying his luck in the German league representing OSC Baden Baden for three seasons, he is looking to play strong tournaments next year, beginning with Corus B in January.
