Paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal, who lost in the semifinals of the Indian Open last month, returned home triumphant after winning the biggest title of his life — the US Open Table Tennis Championships — held at Grand Rapids (Michigan) from June 29-July 3.

Sharath defeated Keinath Thomas (Slovakia) 4-3 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 to win the top prize of $10,000 (Rs 468,650). The Sharath-Shubhadeep Saha duo finished runner-up in men’s doubles, losing to the Chinese.

The US Open turned out to be a profitable event for the Indians as Sanil Shetty, Utkarsh Gupta and K Spoothy all won their first international titles in U-21 and U-13 categories.
