Indian paddlers shine at US Open

Paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal, who lost in the semifinals of the Indian Open last month, returned home triumphant after winning the biggest title of his life — the US Open Table Tennis Championships — held at Grand Rapids (Michigan) from June 29-July 3.

Paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal, who lost in the semifinals of the Indian Open last month, returned home triumphant after winning the biggest title of his life — the US Open Table Tennis Championships — held at Grand Rapids (Michigan) from June 29-July 3.

Sharath defeated Keinath Thomas (Slovakia) 4-3 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 to win the top prize of $10,000 (Rs 468,650). The Sharath-Shubhadeep Saha duo finished runner-up in men’s doubles, losing to the Chinese.

The US Open turned out to be a profitable event for the Indians as Sanil Shetty, Utkarsh Gupta and K Spoothy all won their first international titles in U-21 and U-13 categories.
