With neither of the pair ready to give up considering what was at stake, England’s calmness in pressure situations saw them clinch the title.
Matthew, ranked No. 2 in the world in PSA rankings, said, “It’s an unbelievable feeling to win two gold medals. I’m just so satisfied right now. We worked well as a pair and got points at the right time.”
Among the women, underdogs Jaclyn Hawkes and Joelle King of New Zealand defeated third seeds Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro of England 11-9, 11-10, widely tipped to win the crown.
In the mixed doubles final, Australia’s Kasey Brown and Cameron Pilley beat King and Martin Knight 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 to claim gold. Brown had earlier also won the bronze in the women’s doubles.
