Pishchalnikova banned, set to lose Olympic medal

Olympic discus silver medallist Darya Pishchalnikova has been given a 10-year doping ban after failing a drugs test for the second time, the Russian athletics federation said on Tuesday.

Olympic discus silver medallist Darya Pishchalnikova has been given a 10-year doping ban after failing a drugs test for the second time, the Russian athletics federation said on Tuesday.

A sample taken from Pishchalnikova, 27, in May last year was re-tested and proved positive for the anabolic steroid oxandrolone.

The federation has annulled all of Pishchalnikova’s results from May 20, 2012, meaning she is set to lose her London Olympic medal.

Havelange quits
Berbe: Joao Havelange has quit as FIFA’s honorary president while Sepp Blatter has been cleared of misconduct in the ISL bribery case, a report by FIFA’s ethics committee said on Tuesday.

The report cleared FIFA president Blatter, who was secretary-general at the time, of any wrongdoing.

Anand wins
St Petersburg: Peaking at the right time, world champion Viswanathan Anand scored a facile victory against Laurent Fressinet of France to be joint third after the seventh round of the Alekhine Memorial Chess Tournament.

The victory helped Anand take his tally to four points out of a possible seven and the way it came was quite satisfying for the Indian ace.

East Bengal qualify
Kolkata: East Bengal became the first Indian team to qualify for the AFC Cup knockout round with an unbeaten record, thrashing Vietnam outfit Sai Gon Xuan Thanh 4-1 in their concluding group H league at the Vivekananda Yubabharati Krirangan here on Tuesday.

The Federation Cup champions finished with 14 points to top group H as they earned the right to host the prequarterfinal, which will be against the group F runners-up.
