Several students, mostly women, and policemen were wounded in clashes after university guards and policemen cane-charged protesters at the Banaras Hindu University during a protest against sexual assault. The waters turned murky with allegations flying between students and university authorities and political parties further stirring matter.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a lathi charge by the police in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where a protest last week against an alleged eve- teasing incident turned violent. The violence erupted after some students, protesting against the incident wanted to meet the varsity’s vice chancellor at his residence, according to the police and a BHU spokesperson. (PTI)

Even the police in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, filed charges of arson and other crimes against 1,200 BHU students protesting a sexual assault by motorcycle-borne assailants. The state reported a 33% rise in sexual harassment cases from 2014 to 2015, according to national crime data, which also reveal that 74% of these cases went unpunished. (PTI)

Following the violence, the district administration declared holidays from September 26 till October 2 in all colleges and universities in Varanasi. The BHU had earlier announced that the holidays would start from September 28. The university also said that security guards were regularly patrolling the campus and assistance from the police had been sought to maintain peace. (PTI)
