Pune police have visited the residence of an 18-year-old girl from Pune who is on the police radar on the eve of Republic Day, after the inspector general (IG) of Kashmir released a statement suspecting a possible suicide bomb attack during the Republic Day parade by the teen.
When asked about the girl, Ravindra Kadam, joint commissioner of Pune police, said that they had visited the girl’s residence to get a statement from her parents, who refused to share her location with the police.
“A few years ago, she was radicalised by the ISIS. She had established contact with them through social media and Internet. The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) had intercepted the move and de-radicalised her. After that, however, we could not maintain surveillance on her after a certain period of time. We have spoken to her parents and they have refused to reveal her location to us. They just said that she is in a certain location for further studies,” Kadam said.
In a communiqué to all district police heads by IG Kashmir Munir Khan, the police have claimed to have received a “strong input that the teen (name withheld for security reasons), a resident of Yerawada in Pune, who is currently in the Valley, may attempt a suicide bomb explosion near or inside a Republic Parade venue”.
The Pune police received an alert regarding the matter on Wednesday. The intelligence bureau, Kadam said, has information that she is at present somewhere in the Valley. A student of a high-school located along Boat Club road, the girl is a resident of an area in Yerawada where she lived with her parents.
“We cannot tell you the exact details of when she was in Pune last but are trying to gather more information which we will share in due time,” Kadam told HT.
