Twenty DJ systems were confiscated by the Dattawadi Police for violating the sound limit norms during Dahi Handi celebrations on Tuesday night at Laxminagar and Taware colony. Police seized a total of ten base speakers and ten top speakers during the raid.
Action was taken at two different places, Laxminagar and Taware colony at Parvati Payatha. Senior police inspector, Anil Patil informed that strict action has been taken against the three Dahi Handi mandals, which were violating sound pollution norms. “While patrolling, we have observed that some of the DJ systems were openly violating the set norms by a large margin, despite the stringent warning issued to them," he said.
Out of the three Dahi Handi mandals, two of them were from Laxminagar and one from Taware colony. Akhil Laxminagar Shahu Vasahat Mitramandal violated the sound regulations by playing music at 100.6 dB (Decibels) while Akhil Laxminagar Shahu Vasahat (Mhasoba Utsav) were caught playing at 100.9 dB and Aranyeshwar Taware colony Dahihandi Utsav was found to be playing at 116.6 dB. According to Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, residential and silence zones, areas around schools, hospitals and religious shrines, should have a maximum noise level of 55 dB and 50 dB in the day and 45 dB and 40 dB at night. Furthermore, owing to the nature of the festival, the Commissionerate Police had directed all Dahi Handi mandals and DJ owners to abide by the stipulated 75 decibel sound limit during Dahi Handi and Ganesh festival on Monday.
The police had conducted meetings with all DJ owners and Ganapati, Dahi handi Mandals and had given them strict warning to abide by all norms given by the Supreme Court. It was decided that anyone found violating the norms would be booked by the police for flouting norms and causing noise pollution.
