Purshottam Karandak participants are imaginative but need to push boundaries
Professor Samar Nakhate, a Fullbright scholar, is passionate about nurturing and creating new young professionals for film, television and theatre. He has designed syllabus and academic content for various film and television courses, including direction, production, scriptwriting and film appreciation for Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune as well as Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata. He is also a member of the selection committee, Pune International Film Festival. Prachi Bari spoke to Nakhate on the recently concluded Purshottam Karandak. How did the plays fare in Purushottam Karandak?
The students have a lot of great ideas. They are imaginative but they lack in their efforts and also cannot execute their ideas well. What we felt that overall, most of the plays very above average and could have done better. Idea is converted into a content, and while giving shape to that content, the students could not gauge the limit to their ideas. It fell short and shallow, thus had less retention value and lost in total impact .
Where did the plays lack according to you?
They are making an effort but they are lacking theatrical perception of design. They had very clichéd ideas of characters, the position, using the various parts of the stage and background of the characters. They did not use the dynamics of the stage and very loosely put it all together. Though they had some good topics, some plays lost in their perception of showing the dilemma , or didn’t know how to use the stage to the fullest. The intensity and complexity of human existence was lost in some of the plays. Some plays only spoke of information but students could have thought out of the box.
What were you looking for in the play while judging them?
We were looking at good characters, use of stage to tell the story and well written script. We found that in the winning play. The winning play had a good plan of logic, with a very simple narrative, where the characters too were well built and were tied together with the social norms, using the mike as an instrument to tell a story of democratic configuration. They also made good use of the stage and the sets. We also liked the structure of showing a play in the play Sorry Paranjape and the story of virtual reality in the play ASL Please.
Has there been any change in the performances at Purshottam Karandak?
Not much actually. Students are still immature, though their surroundings have changed but the content and broadness of presenting it in a creative form is lacking. The ideas are at par but how to make it into a work of art is not getting through. They need to work on voice and body language and somewhere they are not pushing themselves forward in the tradition of Purushottam. There have been plays which have pushed barriers to create a name. The present generation need to challenge themselves for they are living in a new technology and cater to consumer-oriented youth, and they need to accept challenges, look at relationships and complexities to present stronger performances. They need to research better for characters and good stories.
