Sardar Dastur School escaped their ten basket deficit nightmare after half time and galloped to an eight basket lead, in the end, 54-42 defeating Vidyanchal School in the semi-finals of the Sanjay Mahadeo Nimhan Memorial u-16 basketball district championship, held at Deccan Gymkhana on Saturday.
The first quarter was tight in terms of the scoreline, and player movement as both teams carefully marked each other making it difficult for runs. However, Dastur managed a two-point lead 10-8.
A series of three-pointers and textbook jump shots from both the teams made the game more interesting before half time. However, Vidyanchal went all out to squeeze a ten basket lead, 20-30.
A great showcase of stamina by Dastur in the next quarter taking advantage of the Vidyanchal players’ tired legs, running rings around them throughout the next quarter.
A series of passes around their opponent’s circle proceeded to players hovering around the pole who netted the ball, significantly reducing the margin and getting them back in the game, 35-37.
Vidyanchal made a few substitutes in the final quarter as they looked tired. Sardar Dastur kept pressing loosening the opponent’s gameplay. The final score was 54-42.
Lalit Nahata, manager of Sardar Dastur school team
My initial tactic was to use our sharpshooters, but they did not manage to convert, hence we had to move our attack closer to the opponent’s ring. It clearly worked as afterwards baskets came pouring in.
Arun Pawar, manager of Vidyanchal School
We lacked the endurance which they had and also we lacked the experience. But no excuses, it was a close score in the last quarter but we missed the final edge.
