Passenger footfall at the Pune railway station has been steadily increasing. With over two lakh passengers using the station daily, congestion during peak hours has become a major issue.

Even as the railway administration is renovating and expanding the station premises with a view to accommodate more passengers, the roads outside the railway station on the side of the main entrance and on the Raja Badadur mill road, behind the station, both face major traffic congestion during peak hours.

The rising number of vehicles with passengers coming in or going out of the station choke both roads at the Pune railway station during peak hours.

A passenger Mina Kaur said, "I frequently travel by train and traffic congestion on roads just outside the station is rising. At present, after 5pm, getting inside the station using a cab, private car or auto rickshaw is becoming very difficult as the entrance is jammed with vehicles. Also, parking has become a major issue as most are not comfortable parking their vehicles far away from the station, which adds to the congestion. "

Another passenger, Mandar Jadhav, shared similar views.

He said, "Once we get down at the station the road outside the main entrance is jammed, so cab drivers want us to come to the Raja Bahadur mill-side. Earlier, this road was never jammed, but recently the traffic congestion here is growing.”

Passenger Ravi Shukla said the condition is worst for pedestrians, for whom getting out of the station becomes difficult.

"People who are new to Pune face a lot of problems as auto rickshaws are not ready to ply everywhere and cabs complain that due to heavy traffic flow outside the main entrance gate they will not be able to wait on the road. Due to this, many passengers now prefer to get out of the station from the Raja Bahadur mill road-side, but that is also not very convenient," he added.

Many autorickshaw drivers are irked with the change in the location of the autorickshaw stand at the Pune Railway station. Autorickshaw driver Asim Shaikh said that since the location of the rickshaw stand has changed most passengers cannot locate the stand. ‘This is hampering the business of the auto rickshaw drivers at the station,” he said.
