The budget of 2017-2018, which for the first time also included the railway budget, had allotted ₹5 crore for the Pune yard remodelling project. According to railway officials, apart from the remodelling of the yard, four more railway line projects had received approval last year, including the Pune-Lonavla third and fourth line. Projects such as the Jeur-Ashti, Phaltan to Pandharpur and Hatkanangale-Ichalkarangi railway lines are also underway after being approved last year.
Pune yard includes platforms and tracks among other things. According to the railway spokesperson, the remodelling work is expected to help increase the frequency of trains to and from the city.
Railway officials said, "The primary need is to extend all platforms to accommodate 24 coach trains. This would allow any train to be stationed at any given platform, which would save time." Railway officials said that currently, only platform 1 and platform 3 of the Pune railway station can accommodate trains with 23 coaches. Due to the restriction, all trains cannot be stationed at any given platform and many a time, trains have to wait, significantly affecting their run-time.”
Divisional railway manager (DRM) Milind Deouskar had earlier said, "For all trains entering the yard, there is a speed restriction of 10 kilometres per hour. With the execution of the remodelling project, this can be eased, which would further save time."
Railway officials said that the remodelling work of the yard is currently in process, with renovation of criss-cross tracks likely to be undertaken soon.
Speaking about the construction of the third and fourth line between Pune and Lonavla, the officials said, "The survey for constructing the third and the fourth line between Pune and Lonavla has been completed. The plan for the same has also been prepared. Firstly, the third line would be constructed, following which, the work of the fourth line will start." The officials added that currently, the main concern is land acquisition, which is a major hurdle. Officials concerned said that they are expecting the state government to intervene and speed it up, but that the project is expected take a longer time than forecast.
The third and the fourth line between Pune and Lonavla is a much awaited project as it would help increase the frequency of trains on this route, which has been a major demand of passengers travelling on the Pune-Mumbai route. The budget of 2017-18 had also made a provision for doubling of tracks on the Pune-Miraj route, which the officials said, is in progress.
