Finally, 134 applications of academicians from various states for the post of vice-chancellor have reached the registrar’s office at Guru Nanak Dev University. Out of these, around 90 applicants meet the criteria and are awaiting for the call of the five-member search committee appointed by Punjab government.

The five-member committee headed by former Punjab tractors chairman and managing director Chandra Mohan will meet to discuss the applications this month in Chandigarh.

Other members of the committee are Punjab Agricultural University V-C Dr BS Dhillon, RS Khandpur and the former director general of Pushpa Gujral Science City. Chief secretary and secretary of higher education are the ex-officio members who will take the decision till the end of this month.

“By June end, vice-chancellor of GNDU will be announced and appointed,” said an official closely involved in the process.

He added that around 60 applications are common for Punjabi University, Patiala; and Guru Nanak Dev University.

In a first, the Congress government has sought applications for the post instead of making a direct appointment. Earlier, the appointments were made solely on the basis of political backing. The UGC guidelines state that a person should have at least 10 years of teaching experience and should fall in the age bracket of 65-75 years to be suitable for the V-C’s post.
