
18-year-old biker killed in accident with ambulance in Mohali
An 18-year-old biker was killed after being hit by an ambulance, coming from the wrong side, at Spice Chowk in Mohali on Friday morning. Victim Ajay was from Uttar Pradesh and was staying on rent at Mohali village in Phase 1 here.
Ajay worked as a peon in a private firm at the Industrial Area here and had stopped at a traffic signal on way to work when the accident took place at 6am. Ajay’s cousin Sunny, who was on another bike, took help of other commuters to put Ajay in the same ambulance, which then left for Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.
But when the ambulance reached Sector 45, it broke down and Ajay was shifted to an auto-rickshaw. He was declared brought dead on reaching the hospital.
The ambulance driver fled when the vehicle broke down at Sector 45. However, he was later arrested.
“We have arrested the driver, Sat Bahadur. The ambulance belongs to the Regional Spinal Injury Centre in Sector 70 and the driver was staying there,” said Phase-1 station house officer (SHO) inspector Rajan Parminder Singh.
He said the ambulance was empty when the accident took place.
On Sunny’s statement, police have registered a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence under Sections 279 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code.
60-yr-old scooterist killed in hit-and-run
A 60-yr-old scooterist was killed on being hit by a speeding car near Bhagomajra village in Mohali. Victim Gurmail Singh, a Banur resident, was on his way to Landran when the car hit him from the rear.
Singh’s head hit the road, leading to fatal injuries. Meanwhile, the car driver fled. He was driving a Maruti Swift. Passersby managed to note its number.
The postmortem will be conducted at the Phase-6 civil hospital on Saturday. A case had been registered at the Sohana police station.
