Upset over a tiff with her roommate over cellphone, an 18-year-old student of a meritorious school here committed suicide by hanging herself in a washroom on Tuesday.
Phoola Devi, a Class 12 student of the science stream at Government Meritorious School at Hakumat Singh Wala village, 18 km from Ferozepur, was found hanging from her dupatta (scarf) — a part of the school uniform — at 8am just as the school opened for the day.
Police said Phoola, who hailed from Hoshiarpur, was staying in the hostel on the school campus. She shared room with four other students. “A fight broke out between Phoola and her roommate on Monday night over cellphone following which she got upset,” said a school official.
On Tuesday morning, the girl did not go to physical training exercise and later went missing from her room. When her roommates could not find her, they raised alarm. Later, a helper found door of a washroom on the campus bolted from inside. When the door was forced open, Phoola’s body was found inside,” said police.
In her suicide note, the girl sought an apology from her friend for using her phone. “I’m sorry that the speaker of your phone got damaged. I can’t say anything more, except sorry. I promise to never touch your phone again. Goodbye …….’alvida’ forever,” said the suicide note.
Ferozepur deputy commissioner Ramvir said a magisterial probe has been ordered and SDM Harjit Singh will submit a report within a week. “As per the statement of the girl’s father, she was upset being staying far away from her home. They did not blame anyone for the step taken by the girl. We have completed proceedings under section 174 (police to inquire and report on suicide) of the IPC. The autopsy is being conducted,” said Ferozepur superintendent of police (investigation) Ajmer Singh.
