The victims were identified as Lovepreet (18) and her cousin Nisha (17), both residents of Sathiali village under Kahnuwan police station.

The duo had gone out for a morning walk on the canal banks. The scene of the rising currents of flowing water in the canal lured Lovepreet, a BA first-year student, to go for a selfie. However, she slipped and fell into the canal. Nisha, a Class-12 student, who tried to catch hold of her falling cousin, also drowned in the canal.

A third girl, Sophia, who was with them, went back to Sathiali village and informed their families.

The Kahnuwan police rushed to the spot along with boats and divers, but could not retrieve the bodies of the two girls till the time of filing this story.
