Akalis resorting to tax terrorism, says Preneet

The Congress will stand by traders in the August 10 shutdown that the state government is trying hard to scuttle. Preneet Kaur, Congress candidate in the assembly byelection for this seat, on Tuesday said here that her party would support Patiala Beopar Bachao Sangharsh Samiti; and Punjab Property Dealers, Plot Holders and Colonisers Association in the protest against “virtual tax terrorism against trade and industry in the state”.

Opposing the nine-month-old amendment in Punjab’s valueadded tax (VAT) law as “draconian”, she said punitive taxes, coming as a double whammy with recession, would deplete the economy further, since trade would suffer and tax collection decline. It was unheard of that either the chemists paid 200% penalty or the police would go for random raids on their shops, said Preneet.
