Amritsar police launches search operation in jail
With regular seizures of mobile phones and toxic powders made from the local Central Jail in the past, the Amritsar police conducted a massive search operation in the Amritsar Central Jail on Tuesday.
ADCP (special) Baljit Singh Randhawa led a heavy posse of policemen and launched the surprise check operation at about 2:30 pm. The raid continued for more than two hours.
Members of the team spread itself and checked every nook and corner of the jail premises. Clothes and personal belongings of jail inmates were also checked. The cooking area and open areas were also checked and four mobile phones were recovered.
The raid on Tuesday was part of the new Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh's policy to check the use of drugs and mobile phones inside jail premises. He has even handed over to the ADCP (special) Baljit Singh Randhawa to look into issues related to the jail.
The Amritsar Central Jail had been under the scanner for alleged violations inside its premises. A pistol was recently recovered from the premises.
Police commissioner Ram Singh said, "Imposing strict curbs inside jails is vital for prevention of crime. Recovery of mobile phones from inside jails is a serious issue. We will carry out detailed investigation of each and every mobile phone recovered from the jail. We want to know that how this mobile is smuggled inside jail. The outsiders who talk to inmates need to be identified?"
He added that his drive will not stop until crime declined substantially in the area.
