More than six months after the Phillaur judicial magistrate (first class) ordered reinvestigation into the suicide by a Nurmahal family and dismissed the closure report, the local police have again presented a cancellation report in the court.
The court of judicial magistrate Parvinder Kaur has adjourned the hearing on the closure report to April 29. Station house officer Kewal Singh said his report was based on the findings of the inquiry of the Jalandhar DSP (D) and Kapurthala DSP (D), which also recommended that the FIR be cancelled.
Former Nurmahal SHO Shiv Dev Singh Kahlon was booked under various sections of the IPC, Prevention of Corruption Act and SC/ST act on the basis of a magisterial inquiry.
Sukhdev Singh, a Dalit from nearby Uppal Khalsa village, his pregnant wife and their daughter (6) had committed suicide by jumping before a train on the Nurmahal-Nakodar section near Mahunwal village on June 8, 2007.
This is the fourth time that police investigation has recommended cancellation of the FIR. Earlier, a probe by the Kapurthala DSP, Jalandhar DSP (D) and the Nurmahal SHO had recommended the same. In 2009, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had said the guilty cop would be punished as per law. He had even asked the then DGP PS Gill to personally monitor the case and ensure submission of challan in the court.
