Badal mourns tragic loss, announces inquiry, relief

A spokesperson of the chief minister's office said Badal, who was away in Mumbai on an official tour, "shared his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved families and prayed to the almighty to give strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss and grant peace to the departed souls". He wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Badal announced ex-gratia grant of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and free treatment for the injured in the mishap and asked the Jalandhar deputy commissioner to provide the best possible treatment to the injured. He also asked the divisional commissioner, Jalandhar, to conduct an inquiry into the incident to ascertain the possible causes of the mishap and suggest remedial measures to prevent such accidents in future.

The CM directed principal secretary SK Sandhu to visit the site and to review and coordinate rescue operations. Sandhu, who reached the site on Monday morning, said all efforts were being made to rescue trapped workers.

Badal will visit the site of the mishap on Tuesday and personally monitor ongoing rescue operations, the spokesperson said. Badal has urged the Centre to send more teams of the National Disaster Response Force to carry out rescue operations.
