Chaudhery, who retired on December 31, 2013, after getting a six-month extension in service is the first bureaucrat to be accorded the rank of a cabinet minister on being appointed as an adviser by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government.

In June 2013, the central government had given a six-month extension in service to Chaudhery after chief minister, Hooda wrote to the Centre seeking extension of service for Chaudhery, an officer whom he had handpicked for the top bureaucratic post in 2012.
