Craze for a foreign land has landed four BTech engineers in jail. The BTech pass-outs were members of a gang of ATM thieves, which the police have busted here. The police have recovered the equipment used to break open ATMs from a rented kothi in Bhamia Kalan near Ludhiana, Rs 40,000 cash, a Swift car and a Bolero car, equipped with a special winch machine to lift and carry ATMs.
The police, with the help of divers, have fished an ATM that the gang members had dumped into a canal in Babbanpur on the Dhuri-Malerkotla road.
The four Lakhwinder Singh Maddu of Kalala village near Mehal Kalan, Sanpreet Singh of Moga, Gurpreet Singh of Quila Hakiman village and Gurinder Singh Goldy of Sangrur were arrested from Mullanpur.
The gang was involved in a series of ATM robberies. It cut open an ATM in Bhotna village in the district and robbed Rs 1.79 lakh a week ago. From Lataala village near Ludhiana, it had robbed Rs 12.5 lakh. The gang members also looted money from ATMs in Malerkotla, Benra near Dhuri and Sarih village in Ludhiana district.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said, "All are BTech engineers and employed in private firms of Ludhiana. They have admitted having paid Rs 8 lakh to a travel agent in Delhi for a Canadian visa."
One of the accused Sanpreet Singh said, "Gurpreet Singh was leading us in the burglaries. We indulged in ATM thefts to arrange money for sending Gurpreet abroad. He had promised he would arrange for our visas after reaching Canada."
"Our parents put a lot of effort and money for our education. I am ashamed for my acts and would never indulge in such activities in future," another accused Sanpreet Singh said.
