The struggle for supremacy among small-time criminal gangs that have mushroomed across the city is becoming a challenge for police.

The city witnessed two gang clashes on Monday evening that claimed one life and left three injured, despite the claims of police about tightening security in the city. Though the police have registered separate cases, no one has been nabbed despite several raids.

The first clash was reported at Barota road on Monday evening between Pinku and Boxer gang following old enmity. In the incident, Pinku, the leader of his gang, was killed while two others sustained injuries. The Daba police have registered a case of murder against Boxer, Deepu, Laddu, Jindar and Ricky. All accused are at large.

Pinku was a labourer in a factory here and was notorious. Many cases have been registered against him and his accomplices. The gang reportedly had rivalry with the Boxer gang of the same area. Boxer, the kingpin of his gang, also has a criminal record. According to the area residents, Pinku and his aides, Angrej and Sukhwinder, were driving through Barota road on two motorcycles. Members of the Boxer gang reportedly pelted stones at them, following which a scuffle between the two groups ensued.

In the meanwhile, Boxer and his accomplices appeared on site and thrashed Pinku and others. Pinku and his accomplices tried to flee and in the attempt, entered a home. Boxer and his accomplice followed them and trapped them in the house.

According to police officials, Boxer had opened nearly four fires on Pinku; three of them missed the target, while one shot pierced through his chin. Boxer and his gang immediately fled leaving Pinku in a pool of blood. Pinku was rushed to DMC hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The area residents told the police that both the gangs indulged in a scuffle the previous night also. According to inspector Jatinder Jit Singh, SHO police station Daba, both the rival gangs possess criminal background. The police have launched manhunt to arrest the accused. Another gang war was reported at Jawaddi area at Dhandhra road on Monday night. Three persons were hurt in the clash. The injured were rushed to DMC hospital. The police have initiated a probe in the case. One of the accused is a proclaimed offender and wanted by police in several criminal cases, including attempt to murder.

The injured have been identified as Amandeep Singh alias Asa, Gopal Mahajan of his rival gang, and Sukhpreet Singh, aide of Gopal. According to information, Gopal Mahajan and Sukhpreet Singh were going towards Dhandhra on a scooter when they were stopped by Amandeep Singh and his accomplices in Jawaddi near a shrine.

They entered in a scuffle and exchanged abuses. They hit each other and flashed guns and opened fire. Asa, Gopal and Sukhpreet sustained bullet injuries. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Amandeep Singh, Golu, Jaskaran Singh, Gurjot Singh Garcha of Dhandhari, Kamal Jawaddi, Avtar Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Harvinder Singh. According to sub-inspector Bant Singh, SHO police station Dugri, the police have been conducting raids for the arrest of the accused.
