Police on Saturday arrested four members of a gang, including notorious gangster Gurjit Singh Bhati, for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting two persons.

A .32 bore revolver with five cartridges and a .315 bore country-made pistol with four cartridges was also recovered from the accused. Bhati had been out on bail in a murder case.

SP (investigation) Swaran Singh Khanna said the accused, Bhati of Teona village, and his accomplices, Abhinav, Bhim Singh and Vijay Kumar of Bathinda were arrested near the Bir Talab when they were travelling in a car.

The arrested accused, along with three of their accomplices, Harpreet Singh, Jagjit Singh and Avtar Singh had abducted Monu of Nai Basti and his friend Pawan Sharma in Bathinda from Model Town area on August 1 evening. The victims were on a scooter that has now been recovered.

“Monu had given Rs 2.7 lakh to Abhinav as both are known to each other. Abhinav gave a cheque to Monu to repay the amount which was dishonoured; at this, Monu had started legal proceedings. The abduction was meant to stop these proceedings and to extort money,” the SP added.
