The district health department finally took action against tobacco vends near educational institutes on Tuesday.

A team of health department under District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Abnash Kumar and district food supply officers (DFSO) Manoj Khosla and Yogesh Bansal conducted raids at two pan shops, operating near SCD Government College.

The tobacco shops, near the Rose Garden and the other near college parking, were in the 100m radius of the college. As per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), no tobacco shop could operate in radius of 100m of any educational or religious institution.

It was important to mention that Principal of SCD Government College had complained to the deputy Commissioner on February 7, regarding tobacco vends outside the college premises.
HT has also reported the issue twice

Khosla said, “We have closed both shops and also fined `200 each for violating the norms.” A warning has also been issued to the owners that they cannot sell tobacco products in the shop near educational institutes.

After taking action on the tobacco shops near SCD Government College, the team also visited other areas to check the status of tobacco shops near schools or colleges.
