A 20-year-old MBBS student of Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in a hostel room on Monday evening.

“We found a sentence scribbled in English on a wall of the room saying ‘I am responsible for my death’.” — Harjinder Singh, Inspector

Joel Joseph, a 3rd-year student who hailed from Kerala, did not attend his evening class. When he didn’t even answer his phone, Joel’s friends broke open the door of the room and saw his body hanging from a fan.

They raised alarm and informed the college authorities, who, in turn, called the police. Medical superintendent Dr William Bhatti said Joel was a brilliant student and had come back on January 8 after vacations.

Joel’s friends said they found nothing suspicious in the former’s behaviour. His parents are doctors and settled abroad. Division Number 3 police station in-charge Inspector Harjinder Singh said: “We found a sentence scribbled in English on a wall of the room saying ‘I am responsible for my death’.”
