Following Balwant Singh Ramoowalia’s move to dump Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for a cabinet rank in Uttar Pradesh (UP), senior party leaders are holding meetings to keep the councillors motivated.
Punjab education minister Daljeet Singh Cheema, who was in SAS Nagar for the inauguration of a state-level sports event, also held a meeting with the SAD councillors at the residence of a party worker on Monday.
In the meeting, the councillors conveyed to Cheema that they wanted a local leader as constituency in-charge to strengthen the SAD in SAS Nagar. Cheema assured them that their sentiments would be conveyed to the high command and that local leaders would be considered while talking final call.
“SAD is an old party which hasn’t been affected by the exit of Ramoowalia. Such opportunistic moves are bad for politics as these shake the faith of the people,” said Cheema.
Not missing an opportunity to take a dig at Congress, Cheema said, “It’s bad for Congress. Even if our person leaves, he does not join Congress and instead prefers another state, another party.”
The SAD councillors told Cheema in the closed door meeting, “The local leaders keep working to strengthen the party and then a candidate is para-dropped who later ditches, maligning the party image.”
A person with clean image should be appointed as the incharge of the constituency who should work to strengthen the organisation, the councillors said.
According to Cheema, the party is in a strong position as all the councillors are united. The priority is to strengthen the organisation, he added.
The Punjab cabinet minister has also assured the councillors that local leaders will be considered on priority while deciding local leadership.
Ramoowalia’s exit makes Kang active
The exit of Ramoowalia has made local SAD leader Kiranbir Singh Kang more active who has started holding meetings. He organised a meeting of the SADBJP councillors at the residence of a BJP councillor on Monday.
Kang, former president of Youth Akali Dal, was lying low for the last couple of years. He was one of the prospective candidates for SAD ticket in the last assembly elections until Ramoowalia was give the candidature by the party high command.
