Farmers of Karontha village of the district are forced to run from pillar to post to encash cheques for meagre sums as compensation for crop damage in 2011.

The cheques carry as meagre an amount as Rs 250. The cheques were distributed among the farmers on February 15th even though they had been issued on November 8, 2013. According to rule, a cheque can only be encahsed within three months of its issuance.

Balbir Dhankhar, a resident of the village, said that when they went with cheques for encashing, the bank refused it, as there was overwriting at two places (on amount and date). The horticulture department officials changed the date apparently to prolong its validity.

He said that when they approached district horticulture office, they were shown the door by saying that the officer concerned was on leave.
