Police suspect that the man, identified as Javinder Singh, a car mechanic of Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar, had committed suicide by jumping into the canal. His body was fished out on late Thursday night and handed over to his family after post-mortem.

As per family members, Javinder had committed suicide after a spat with his wife. His brother, Parminder Singh, said that Javinder had left home on Tuesday saying that he was going to bring home his wife, who had gone to her parental house on Tibba Road after a small quarrel. But after reaching there, they again had an altercation, after which his wife refused to go home with him.

In a fit of rage, Javinder took his scooter and went to the canal near Ferozepur Road. From there he made a call to his wife and told her that he was going to end his life. His wife informed Parminder and other relatives.

“We made repeated attempts to call him on his mobile phone, but to no avail as he had switched off his phone. When we reached near Sidhwan Canal near Ferozepur road, we found his scooter parked near Canal and his mobile phone was also lying there,”said Parminder Singh.

“We immediately sounded to the police. The police reached at the spot and started investigation. On Thursday, his body found near Issewal village,”he added.

Inspector Jatinder Singh, the station house officer (SHO) at Division Number 5 police station said that it appears to be a case of suicide and that they have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
