National vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Smriti Irani on Saturday appealed the people to give the party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi a chance to put the country's economy back on the track of growth.
Addressing a conference organised by the National BJP Chartered Accountants Cell here, she advocated the 'Modi for PM' campaign in view of his "tried and tested leadership" in Gujarat. She said that Modi has set his state Gujarat as a model in the past 15 years of his tenure as Chief Minister.
The meet was attended by BJP state president Kamal Sharma, cabinet minister Chunni Lal Bhagat, Jalandhar Central MLA Manoranjan Kalia, Jalandhar North MLA KD Bhandari, district president BJP Subhash Sood and other senior leaders of the party from the district and conveners of several state cells.
Irani, in her speech during the meet attended by over 500 CAs, said that the Congress has already accepted its defeat in the forthcoming polls as it has not formally announced Rahul Gandhi as its prime ministerial candidate till date. She said that during its 10-year regime, the Congress-led UPA did nothing for the welfare of the people of the country.
"In 2010, the Supreme Court had chided the Congress-led UPA government in view of the rotting of huge quantity of foodgrains in the godowns and asked it to distribute these among the poor. The Congress has now brought a Food Security Bill which is nothing but a mockery in the name of welfare to befool the people," Irani said.
Regarding the performance of the NDA government, she said, "Our government during its tenure had distributed free ration to the people in drought-hit areas in 2002. During the NDA regime, the GDP of the country was 15 per cent which has gone down to 7.5 per cent under UPA," she said.
The conference was also addressed by Kamal Sharma and co-convener of National CA Cell Sanjay Kapoor.
