Four people reportedly robbed Rs 5.2 lakh at gun point from the mother of BJP councillor Vinay Mahajan at the Ganpati Enclave in Batala, a posh and thickly populated area, on Friday night.

According to information, victim Madhu Mahajan was coming back to her home around 8 pm after collecting cash from her garments shop on the city road. As she reached outside her house, four armed persons stopped her and asked her to hand over the money she was carrying in two bags.

After snatching the bags, all the four fled towards the Amritsar road, where a car was already waiting for them. Though, the entire incident was recorded in a CCTV camera, but due to inadequate light, the accused were not identified.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Opinderjit Singh Ghuman, along with SP (headquarters) Suba Singh, reached the spot and sounded an alert in the area. The SSP said that the mobile phone of Madhu Mahajan was also lying in the bag. When they traced the location of the mobile, it showed that it was lying somewhere near the Khajuri gate locality, where a search operation was launched on Friday night, but till now they have failed to recover the phone. The phone is now switched off.
