Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife and Amritsar-East MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu has stirred a controversy in the state unit of the BJP by commenting on Facebook that her husband had switched over to the television world because he was "made to feel suffocated in the system for his honesty".

Notably, the Amritsar MP has not been in the city for the past few months and has signed contracts for various TV shows. Apart from participating in the reality show "Big Boss", Sidhu has also been commentating for cricket matches. He is also hosting a show in the ongoing T20 tournament.

Apart from dealing with infighting in the BJP, Sidhu also had differences with the SAD over the municipal corporation elections, which boiled down to a war of words with Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Political observers feel Sidhu is nursing a grudge against the BJP leadership for denying him a post in the party's national executive, but at the same time making senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla, a former MLA from Amritsar, a vice-president.

Dr Sidhu's comment on Facebook on Sunday that her husband has "gone back to the profession where he is respected" has put a question mark on the Amritsar MP's political career.

Talking to HT, Dr Sidhu said, "I have every right to express myself. There are people in the party who are responsible for all this. People of Amritsar had faith in him, and that is the reason why he won thrice from here. Despite working hard and having a clean image, he continued to be sidelined. He was not even consulted before the district and state teams of the party were announced. This is not what he deserves."

She said her husband would always stand by the people of Amritsar, but it was up to the party to restore his honour.

The BJP MP could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

The comment

Navjot Sidhu, as a public figure, not as a husband, leaves family for 5 years to serve his constituency; leaves contracts of at least 10 cr per year for 10 years; runs from pillar to post for major projects for Amritsar, all scuttled by union and state governments, why? How can you let an honest leader survive, one who does not support criminals, does not become party to commission system? so, finally you pair up to push him aside; make him feel suffocated in the system… you don't let him run the show even in Amritsar; why? Because he will not join opposition leaders to defeat their own men, will not be a party to engulf people's properties? Evil wins over; still kaliyug; Amritsar loses a real leader. I salute him because truth always wins.
