The Students for Society (SFS) has once again fielded a woman presidential candidate for the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections, likely to be held in the first week of September.

22-year-old Kanupriya is a second-year student of MSc at zoology department.

When contacted, SFS spokesperson Harmandeep Singh confirmed Kanupriya’s candidature.

Kanupriya has been involved in the working of SFS since 2014. Back then, Amandeep Kaur was elected the first presidential candidate. Kanupriya actively started participating in the party activities in 2015.

“Transparency in university hostel allotment and 24 hours hostel timing will be our primary goals this year. How can there be gender equality if the girls cannot actively participate in decision-making here? We will create a student council that will act as a pressure group,” she said.

As of now, no woman candidate has won the PUCSC elections.

Kanupriya is the third woman presidential candidate of SFS in the past five years. Its first presidential candidate, Amandeep Kaur had got 1,334 votes in 2014 elections. Last year, its presidential candidate Hassanpreet Kaur got 2,190 votes, making SFS the runner-up for the first time.
