The strike by the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) over non-payment of salaries entered its 10th day on Wednesday.
"Director principal Dr Kulbir Kaur called our representatives on Tuesday and asked us to join duty. She assured us that by April 20, the management will release our pending salaries. However, after ameeting within ourselves, we refused to join work," said an agitating employee.
Paramedical staff; including all technicians and clerical staff working in different departments, went on strike on April 1 after failure of management to transfer salaries in their accounts.
"We have not been paid salaries from December. Doctors have been working without salaries for more than six months. We are working in a lot of pressure and even anti-human atmosphere. For getting our salaries released, we have to resort to an agitation.
"Only emergency services are being handled presently by the doctors. The OPD has not been functioning,"said another agitating employee.
In September 2012, PIMS promoters had expressed their inability before the state government to run operations as they were losing nearly Rs 3 crore a month. However, the government is yet to take a call. The institute was allotted to a charitable society headed by minister Rakhra on 99-year lease basis during the previous SAD-BJP regime.
PIMS PRO Nayala Arora, said on the behalf of principal pirector, responded, "We have transferred one month salary in the accounts of employees and are in touch with the management for the early release of the salaries of staff working in PIMS."
