Ludhiana residents might have given a thumbs-up to the tow-away drive of the traffic police, but they are sometimes at the receiving end of the police action on this count in the absence of proper demarcation of space on roads for parking of vehicles.
Many people have griped that traffic police tow away their vehicles even when parked inside the white line painted on roads. They claimed that police on the other hand retort that it was the yellow line that demarcates parking areas while the area within the white line was meant for pedestrians. Interestingly, no road in the city except some areas of Ghumar Mandi has yellow line markings.
An NRI Soni Goyal rued that traffic police towed away his car from Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar on Sunday, even though it was parked well inside the white line. "When I raised the issue with traffic police, they said that only yellow line was used for parking area," he said.
"I was shocked to see there was no yellow line on the spot. When I pointed this out, the policeman replied that it was not his problem and towed away my vehicle," said the NRI.
"I have checked out several areas of the city after the incident and found no yellow line markings on roads in majority of the areas," Goyal added.
"In case area marked by white line is meant for pedestrian, where should people park their vehicles in residential colonies and markets," he contended.
Jaspreet Singh Walia of Civil Lines said that police drive had been defeated since no proper markings had been made on roads to earmark parking areas. Police should not carry out the drive in those areas where proper road markings are not yet in place, he demanded.
Police have towed away around 15,000 vehicles since February 2012 when the drive was launched.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Satvir Singh Atwal maintained that it was municipal corporation duty to demarcate roads, claiming that the civic body had demarcated parking areas on some roads but the same had been erased due to sudden fall in temperature and dense fog. The corporation would be asked to demarcate parking areas again, he assured.
