An inmate of Patiala Central Jail, who was arrested for immigration fraud, ended up duping the prison warden of Rs 11 lakh.
The warden, Tarlochan Singh, has now filed a case against Mohinder Chopra, who has been out on bail for a while and is currently absconding. Chopra, a native of Bhiwani in Haryana, became friendly with Singh after he was arrested in 2009.
“He told me he had helped several people settle abroad. And when I showed interest, he said he could help my son, Sarabjit, settle in Europe,” said Singh.
In return, he asked for a fee of R1 lakh to be delivered to his Bhiwani residence to initiate the process as he was still in jail. By early 2010, Singh had paid several installments.
In his FIR, Singh alleged, “After Chopra came out on bail in February 2010, he took some more money from my son and handed him some documents to apply for visa to some European countries.”
By the time embassies discovered that the documents were forged, Chopra had jumped bail.
