Robbers killed a 33-year-old woman and decamped with Rs 1 lakh and some gold jewellery from her house in Kamala Nehru Colony here on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Kanika Gupta, was with her one-and-a-half-year-old son Samarth in the house when the robbers struck. Her husband Anil Gupta, a chartered accountant, had gone to his office.
Police said robbers slit Kanika’s throat with a knife and strangulated her to death.
The incident came to light when victim’s brother Anuj Kumar came to see her as she did not attend repeated phone calls by her parents who also live in Bathinda. She was found dead on the floor while her son was sleeping on the bed.
Later, it was found that the robbers took away Rs 1 lakh and some gold ornaments from the house.
Police said the miscreants also took away the digital video recorder of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed on both the front and rear gates of the house.
Police registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC against unknown persons in this connection.
The cops said the crime was committed after 11 am when the domestic help of the family had left the house after completing her work.
Kanika was second wife of Anil Gupta who had divorced his first wife.
Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Navin Singla, who visited the crime spot, said, “We are investigating the case from all angles and culprits will be traced soon.”
