A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader was arrested for allegedly pointing his gun at a traffic cop after he towed away his Toyota Innova car for wrong parking at Ghumar Mandi on Thursday evening.
The Division Number 8 police reached the spot immediately after being informed, and arrested the accused, identified as Bhupinder Singh Mangat, 60, resident of Noorpur Bet village. He claimed to be the circle president of the SAD. He was on Friday presented in a court that sent him to judicial remand.
In his complaint , head constable Sukhdev Singh of the traffic police, said while on duty to check wrong parking on Thursday evening, he noticed a Toyota Innova parked outside the permissible line in the main market of Ghumar Mandi.
He said to ease the traffic flow, he started the process to tow away the car, when its owner Bhupinder Singh Mangat turned up there, and started arguing.
Sukhdev said he explained to Mangat that his vehicle was parked outside the permissible line, and presented a picture of the vehicle being parked as such. Yet, Mangat tried stop him from towing away the vehicle, claiming that his vehicle was parked correctly. “He then proceeded to assault me and flashed a gun, threatening me that he will shoot me if I dared tow away his car,” the head constable added.
ASI Mukhtiar Singh, in-charge at Ghumar Mandi police post, said Mangat had been booked under Sections 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and under the Arms Act.
