Superintendent of police Jaskaran Singh Teja said, “The divers are trying to locate the body, while the police are conducting raids to nab the accused.” He added that the person detained by the Barnala police was not accused Gurvinder Sharma.

On Tuesday, a second-year BA student was pushed into the Bhakra Canal near Passiana Chowk here by her boyfriend, following an argument. This had been witnessed by the victim’s friend. Reports suggest that Gurvinder and his friends Sukhmani and Rohit (both in their early 20s) had picked up the victim from outside her college and her friend from her paying-guest accommodation here.

The police had booked Gurvinder and his friend under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence), and 34 (common intent in crime) of the IPC.
