Eight persons were injured as a truck loaded with cement overturned near the Sector 70/71 light point on Airport Road on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at around 1.45am after being hit by a Himachal Roadways bus which was en route to Delhi from Manali.

As per the police, the truck driver had to be pulled out of the vehicle by breaking the front window screen. Bus driver Roshan Lal too was critically injured and has been admitted to Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali. Apart from the two, five passengers of the bus also received minor injuries, and they were discharged after first-aid.

Truck owner Baljinder Singh, while talking to the media, said that the truck loaded with cement was on its way to Jalandhar from Panipat. “The bus was speeding. In a bid to avoid collision, the driver tried to swerve but in the process, hit a traffic light and overturned,” he said. However, bus conductor Ranjeet Singh said that the truck had caused the accident.

Meanwhile, traffic congestion was witnessed on the Airport Road on Wednesday as cement bags lay scattered on the road, following the accident.

HRTC official HK Gupta said,“I got information about the accident in the morning. We have asked the officials concerned in Chandigarh to look into the matter.”

A case in this regard is yet to be registered as the police are yet to record the statements of the truck driver and bus driver.
