Maur SHO Sandeep Singh said victim Surjit Singh, 75, had died five days ago following illness and his son Mohan, 16, buried him in their backyard as he did not have resources to go for his cremation.

The body was dug out by stray dogs, which resulted in foul smell in the area and the police were called.

The SHO said that on the statement of Sunita, daughter of the deceased, police have conducted inquest proceedings and the body has been sent to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for postmortem.
