At least two persons were killed when a car collided with a moving tractor trolley on the national highway no-1 in the city limits on Sunday night.
Deceased have been identified as Rajinder Singh of Kurar village in Panipat district and Kalu from Uttar Pradesh.
Injured Rajinder Singh, also a resident of Kurar is admitted at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College here and stated to be out of danger.
Civil Lines Station house officer Lalit Kumar said that the victims were travelling from Panipat.
He said that driver of tractor trolley fled from the spot after the accident.
Search is on to identify and nab the tractor driver, said the SHO.
“Trolley did not have backlight or reflectors and probably the car driver did not notice the vehicle and rammed into it. Front part of the car was totally damaged in the accident both died on the spot,” said the SHO.
The accident spot was nearly 500-metres away from Nirmal Kutiya Chowk where various saffron organisations on Sunday morning had performed havan by blocking underpass of the national highway-1.
HT had reported reactions of cross-section of the society that instead of pressing the government machinery on sincere efforts to curb road accidents, politicians were engaged in divine interventions for the man-made reasons.
Yesterday, local Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) parliamentarian Ashwani Kumar Chopra “Minna”, officer on special duty (OSD) to the chief minister, Amrendra Singh, Karnal mayor Renu Bala Gupta and several others from the BJP, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal participated in a ‘havan’ in the memory of victims of road accidents.
Absence of traffic signals and slip roads in Karnal on the NH-1 are major cause of concern but nothing has been to improve the situation.
On November 16, a driver and conductor of Haryana Roadways bus were killed, while 13 others were injured when a private bus collided at Nirmal Kutiya Chowk intersection without traffic signals.
