She had gone to New Zealand two years ago on a student visa and was working as a computer operator in a private company. She had got married in 2014 and her husband, Satwinder Singh (30) of the same town, had joined her in New Zealand only six months ago.

Her brother-in-law Charanjit Singh said Satwinder told him Gurpreet’s body was found at her workplace with injury marks on her neck. He said it was yet to be investigated by the Auckland police whether it was murder or suicide. The post-mortem report is awaited.

A pall of gloom descended on the town on Thursday after the family received the news. “She had talked to us two days ago. The family is in shock. We cannot believe that she is not with us anymore,” Charanjit told HT over phone.

Kaur’s two elder brothers, Gurjeet Singh and Surjit Singh, live in Balachaur. Gurjeet said their father Balbir Singh lives in Dubai. The victim had completed a diploma from a local Industrial Training Institute (ITI) before moving to New Zealand.
