What steps can be taken for permanent protection of the Aravalli area in NCR?
Experts say that the next steps would be to declare the Mangar Bani a forest area so that it gets the protection of forest laws. This area can then be declared as a sanctuary. Many sanctuaries today which were earlier hunting grounds of maharajas, have been taken over by the government. Parts of Mangar Bani and its buffer in the hill regions in Mangar, Kot and Bandhwadi should also be declared a sanctuary to give that additional layer of protection under the Wildlife Protection Act, even after Mangar Bani is notified as a no-construction area.
In terms of the ownership, it is essential to bring the area back to public ownership. The government can implement the Jagpal Singh judgment and restore ownership back to panchayats. If that doesn’t work, it could buy back the land.
