And, like everything with a mass appeal, it takes some smart moves to maximize your odds of finding that special someone in the virtual world. If you are new to the game, we tell you how to wade your way through the maze. Being proactive and forward-thinking is the name of the game.

Also, be careful not to be lulled into habits that will undermine your online dating experience. Follow these tips:

1Don't fall for pictures
There's more to people's personality than what their pictures suggest. Just because a person looks stunning in the profile picture, give the credit to the photographer, if you may! Sure it is a good conversation starter, but keep the profile picture to just that and nothing more.

2Ignore all tall claims about 'pleasing personality'
Surveys suggest that most people are very pompous when it comes to their online profile, almost always bordering on being false. Beware of statements such as 'I have a very good sense of humor' or 'I'm an optimistic person'. These 'lies' may not always be deliberate, but the fact remains that most of us look at ourselves very differently from how we come across to strangers.

3Be clear and realistic about your expectations
While looking for that someone special online, be realistic with how you want your love to be. It is not a given that you'll find your perfect match for sure, but it would help if you are clear about what you are looking for and how much you are willing to compromise. Over fantasizing or unreal expectations will do you no good.

4Give yourself time to know the person better
If you're attracted to someone online, don't rush to get into a relationship and taking each other as your life partner. Rather, give more time to know each other and then plan your future and of course be careful to trust someone you met online! You never know what kind of person he/she is behind the screen.

5Always keep first dates in public
When you feel you are ready to meet the person you met online, don't forget that you are still meeting a stranger. If you've had a long period of email and phone exchanges, don't be lulled into any false sense of familiarity or security. Never agree to meet at the other person's place. Agree to meet in public place and make sure at least one of your friends knows about it in detail. No matter how close you're, it always good to take a precaution.
