MUMBAI: Derek Redmond was in excellent form before the 1992 Barcelona Games and posted the fastest time of the first round in the 400m. In 1988, he pulled out 90 seconds before the start of the first round because of an injury and was determined to complete this race. But 250m from the semi-final finish line, Redmond’s hamstring tore and he fell to the floor. He got up hobbled toward the finish line, braving pain. His father Jim ran onto the track to help him complete the stretch. Redmond wept into Jim’s shoulder as father and son walked across the finish line to a standing ovation from 65,000 spectators in the stadium.
