MUMBAI: Diego Forlan got off the mark for Mumbai City FC by scoring the winner against North-East United FC on Friday.

In Mumbai City’s first home game of ISL 2016, Forlan was the shining star, making all the right runs and giving his teammates options as the lone striker; although he got little service from open play.
The difference was made by the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid man when he stepped up and converted a penalty in the 55th minute after Pronay Halder was fouled in the box by Reagan Singh.
Incidentally, Forlan’s first goal for Manchester United was also scored from the spot, although in much contrasting circumstances. The Uruguayan’s career for United was famously blighted by a long goalless period in its initial phase. It was in his 27th match for United — a Champions League group stage encounter with Maccabi Haifa at Old Trafford — that Forlan scored his first goal in United colours.
Here, Forlan scored in his second match for the team and his first home game.
Although North-East United goalkeeper Subrata Paul was able to get a hand to the penalty struck down the middle, there was enough power on it to reach the net. The two-time European top-scorer was also the first player to register a shot on target, stinging the palms of the former Mumbai City goalkeeper less than two minutes after kick-off to clearly display his intent for the rest of the match.
RESULT: Mumbai City FC 1 (Forlan 55-pen) bt North-East United FC 0
