NEW DELHI: India’s top golfers Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia will be representing India at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as golf makes its return to the quadrennial sporting extravaganza after 112 years.

Along with the seasoned duo, young Aditi Ashok will represent the country in the women’s event. With July 11 being the cutoff date for Olympic qualification, Lahiri and Chawrasia have made the grade for Rio as per the International Golf Federation’s rankings (based on world rankings) for the men’s competition.

Reigning Asia No 1 Anirban Lahiri (world No 62) and reigning Indian Open champion SSP Chawrasia (world No 207) were placed 20th and 45th respectively in the International Golf Federation’s (IGF) ranking list.

The two Indians have now officially sealed their places in the elite field of 60 players.

Lahiri, a winner of seven international titles, will be spearheading India’s campaign at Rio. Anirban had enjoyed an exceptional season in 2015 with two wins on the European Tour and a phenomenal tied fifth finish at the PGA Championship.

HARIKA MOVES CLOSER TO GRAND PRIX WIN

CHENGDU (CHINA): Indian Grand Master Harika Dronavalli pulled off another fine draw in the ninth round of the Fide Women’s Grand Prix on Tuesday to stay on top of the leaderboard with six points. The young chess player from Andhra Pradesh is just two steps away from winning her first Grand Prix title.

The points table saw dramatic changes on Tuesday, with Koneru Humpy of India losing her game to Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine and slipping to the third position. Stefanova Antoaneta ( 5. 5 points) moved to t he second spot.

PRERNA TOPPLES TOP SEED IN PRE-QUARTERS

NAVI MUMBAI: Kolhapur’s Prerna Alvekar outplayed Saie Nandurkar, the top seed from Nagpur, in straight games to storm into the girls under-15 singles quarterfinals of the 2nd Maharshtra State Dr Vijay Patil Sub-junior Badminton Selection Tournament at DY Patil Sports Academy at Nerul.

Prerna wrapped up the tie 21- 18, 21- 5 in just about 20 minutes.
