MUMBAI: An ad-hoc committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association on Monday met to discuss a proposal by advertising agency DDB Mudra, to sell naming rights of the Wankhede Stadium. The committee however has asked for more details and clarity from the agency, MCA secretary PV Shetty revealed. “The agency has proposed to sell naming rights of the stadium. The stadium’s original name will be retained while the sponsor’s name will be added as a prefix,” Shetty said.

“The discussions are in the initial stages and nothing has been finalised,” Shetty added. The revised proposal will next be tabled in a managing committee meeting scheduled for next week.
The stadium, named after former MCA president SK Wankhede, was built in 1974. It underwent redevelopment ahead of the 2011 cricket World Cup and hosted the final which saw India clinch the title by beating Sri Lanka. Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) had similarly sold the naming rights of its stadium. However, the deal turned sour after Sahara group, which bought the rights, failed to make timely payments.
