BANGKOK: The 84-year-old grandmother of a Thai Olympic bronze medal winner collapsed and died on Monday while celebrating the weight-lifter’s success in Rio, police said. The octogenarian was watching a live broadcast of her 20-year-old grandson, Sinphet Kruaithong, take third place in the 56kg division. But a viral video showed the jubilant scene of cheering fans in his rural home-town transform into tragedy after his grandmother, Subin Khongthap, collapsed while watching the competition on a projector. “The initial assumption is that she died from heart failure — but we have to wait for the hospital’s result,” said Somwang Prangprakoan a police officer.
China fans furious with Rio organisers over flags
BEIJING: Most of the five stars on the Chinese flags being used at medal ceremonies are misaligned, officials said, prompting a diplomatic protest and online fury. Chinese internet users were quick to detect a “plot” against the country, which came second in the medals table at London 2012, and branded the Brazilian organisers the “worst ever”. The Chinese flag features one large star — representing the Communist Party — half surrounded by four smaller stars tilted to point toward the centre of the bigger one. But the small stars on the Rio flags, including the one lifted by Chinese fencer Lei Sheng at the opening ceremony Friday, all point upwards.

Namibian boxer arrested for attempted sexual assault
RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian police have arrested a 22-year-old Namibian boxer on suspicion of attempting to sexually assault a room maid at the Olympic Village, a police statement on Monday said. Jonas Junius, who is competing in the light welter division, allegedly grabbed the maid and tried to kiss her. He is also suspected of offering the victim money to sleep with him. The maid reported the incident to the police.
‘Isinbayeva’s CAS appeal unlikely to help her cause’
MOSCOW: Russian athletes Yelena Isinbayeva and Sergei Shubenkov’s appeal for participation at Rio OLympics to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is unlikely to help them, AllRussian Athletics Federation (ARAF) chief Dmitry Shlyakhtin said on Monday. “The time limits of submitting and the time of examining an appeal are quite lengthy and I don’t think they will be on time to perform at the Olympics. But this is my opinion,” Shlyakhtin said on Sunday.
