AIFF, ESPN dole out Rs 1.5 mn each to India football team

The AIFF and ESPN have doled out Rs 1.5 million each as incentive bonus to the football team for winning the AFC Challenge Cup.

The All Indian Football Federation (AIFF) and the telecast rights holders of the event ESPN have doled out Rs 1.5 million each as incentive bonus to the India team for winning the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup and qualify for the Asia Cup after 24 years,

The 23 players, chief coach Bob Houghton and six-member support staff will share the money.

"It is a great moment for Indian football. And after watching the final, our managing director RC Venkateish felt that the boys should be rewarded for their brilliant performance. It is our way of sharing the joy with the team and hopefully we will extend our support to them beyond the 2011 Asia Cup," ESPN spokesman told IANS.

Head coach Bob Houghton was given Rs 1,00,000 and Rs. 50,000 each to the two assistant coaches, goalkeeping coach, team manager, doctor and physio.

Thehe players were given Rs 50, 000 each in Hyderabad for reaching the final, which was shifted to Delhi because of intermittent rain.

"This is only for starters, much more is in the pipeline. Soon the federation is going to raise funds and the players' interests will be taken care of," a top AIFF official said.

Skipper Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri called on sports minister MS Gill on behalf of the team in the afternoon.

Some senior players expressed their happiness over the instant recognition they received for their success.
